Hydrometry is the science of measuring water in the environment. It covers rainfall, groundwater, water quality, and the flow of rivers, lakes, and streams. The word comes from Greek: hydor (water) and metron (measure). Hydrometry is a part of hydrology and an engineering-focused field that aims to quantify water resources. It brings together skills from engineering, hydrology, structures, control systems, computing, data management, and communications. The International Organization for Standardization defines hydrometry as the science of measuring water, including the methods, techniques, and tools used for measurement. Practically, hydrometry helps scientists and engineers manage water resources, monitor the water cycle, and support safe and sustainable water use.
