Hungary national rugby league team
The Hungary national rugby league team, nicknamed the Magyar Bulls, represents Hungary in rugby league football. They are governed by the Hungarian Rugby League Federation and compete in Europe. The team is coached by Jonathan Wilson. Their captains include Dane Weatherill, James Kovac, and Nathan Farkas. Hungary is ranked 51st in the IRL world rankings.
Their first game was in July 2011, a 16–38 defeat by the Czech Republic in Kecskemét. Their biggest win came in July 2017, a 56–4 victory over Poland in Budapest. Their worst defeat was 0–90 to Greece in October 2013, also in Budapest. Hungary has not yet appeared in the Rugby League World Cup.
History and development: The Magyar Bulls RLFC was founded in Budapest in May 2011 by members of Budapest Exiles RFC, with the aim of competing in the European Bowl against the Czech Republic. They trained on Margit Island and built a core group of about 20 players to face the Czech Republic on 23 July. In 2013, Hungary was granted observer status by the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF) and later played a fully sanctioned international against Greece.
In 2014, Hungary competed in the Balkans Cup in Serbia, finishing fourth. They recorded their first international try in a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2015 they toured Belgrade for the Euro 9s tournament.
The team has included players eligible to represent Hungary such as Kurt Falls, Blake Mozer and Myles Gal. A squad was selected for the 2018 Emerging Nations World Championship.
