Hidayatullah II of Banjar

Hidayatullah II, born Gusti Andarun in 1822 in Martapura, was the Banjar royal heir. The Dutch East Indies government supported his half-brother Tamjidullah II as sultan, which caused tension in the sultanate. To ease this, the Dutch made him mangkubhumi with the title Prince Hidayatullah in 1856. In 1859, Banjar troops led by Prince Antasari attacked a Dutch-owned coal mine at Pengaron, starting the Banjarmasin War. The colonial government deposed Tamjidillah II and tried to crown Hidayatullah, but he refused; Banjar commanders nonetheless crowned him sultan in September 1859. He led Banjar fighters against the Dutch until 1862, when he and his family were captured and exiled to Cianjur, West Java, where he lived until his death on 24 November 1904. In 1999, Indonesia awarded him the Bintang Mahaputera Utama for his anti-imperialist leadership.
