Herbert Lytle
Herbert Hartland Lytle (July 9, 1874 – March 4, 1932) was an American racecar driver. Born in Malone, New York, he began racing around 1900 and teamed with riding mechanic James Bates. In his Champ Car career he raced 9 times over four years, with a best finish of 8th in 1905. His first race was the 1905 Glenville Race in Cleveland, and his last was the 1911 Indianapolis 500. He won his first race in 1910, the 50-mile race at the Atlanta Motordrome, a two-mile dirt track; he was the only American to finish the Gordon Bennett Cup in France in 1905. Lytle died in Warsaw, Indiana, on March 4, 1932. His wife Josephine Della J. Leer Lytle died the next day from pneumonia at age 36; they had a dual funeral on March 7, 1932. He had previously been married to Gertrude Fannie Harbord Lytle, who died in 1926.
