Henry Thew Stephenson
Henry Thew Stephenson (April 22, 1870 – 1957) was an American teacher and writer known for his work on Shakespeare. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Reuben Henry and Louise Wright Stephenson. He attended Woodward High School and earned degrees from Ohio State University, Harvard University, and Indiana University. He spent a year researching at the British Museum. In 1895 he joined the English Department at Indiana University. In 1898 he took a break to earn a second bachelor’s degree from Harvard. He stayed at Indiana University until his retirement in 1940, and served as department chair from 1919 to 1921. He helped start the Phi Beta Kappa chapter at IU in 1910 and received an A.M. Privitam degree that same year. He published several fiction and non-fiction works while teaching. Stephenson died in 1957 at about age 87.
