The Archdiocese of Brindisi-Ostuni is a Catholic archdiocese in the Apulia region of southern Italy. It is part of the Latin Church and follows the Roman Rite. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Lecce.

Geography and people: The archdiocese covers about 1,253 square kilometers and serves roughly 263,000 people, of whom about 259,000 are Catholics, in 58 parishes.

History in brief: Brindisi has been an important Christian center since ancient times. The diocese of Ostuni was added in 1821, and the combined archdiocese has carried the name Brindisi-Ostuni since 1986. The archdiocese lost its status as a metropolitan see in 1980. Early Christian history is not well documented; legend speaks of Leucius as an early bishop. The city’s cathedral was rebuilt in the center of Brindisi in 1140 by Roger II. Brindisi and Oria were historically linked, with Oria becoming a separate diocese in 1591. In 1818, Ostuni was joined to Brindisi as part of a regional reorganization.

Today: The archdiocese’s primary church is the Cathedral Basilica of the Visitation and Saint John the Baptist in Brindisi, and its co-cathedral is the Co-cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The current archbishop is Giovanni Intini; emeritus bishops include Rocco Talucci and Domenico Caliandro. Website: brindisiostuni.chiesacattolica.it
