Hemirrhagus akheronteus
Hemirrhagus akheronteus is a tarantula in the Hemirrhagus genus that lives in Mexico, in the state of Querétaro inside the Cueva del Río Jalpan cave in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. It was described in 2018 by Mendoza and Francke, and its name comes from akheronteus, referring to the mythic river Acheron in the underworld.
The spider is a solid grey to black color, helping it blend with rocks. Unlike many New World tarantulas, it does not have urticating hairs. In males, there are movable thornlike hairs on the legs; females do not have these hairs. Specimens were found about 400 meters from the cave entrance.
The Sierra Gorda reserve sits at elevations from about 300 to 3,100 meters above sea level, with a semi-warm to subhumid climate and mostly rocky, sedimentary geology.
