Lulu Kennedy
Lulu Kennedy MBE is a fashion founder and curator. She started Fashion East, MAN, and runs the Lulu & Co clothing line. She is also editor-at-large of Condé Nast’s LOVE magazine and works as a consultant for brands.
Born in 1969, she grew up in Ibiza, Devon, and Sicily. In the early 1990s she spent time at raves in Naples, then moved back to the UK in 1995 and got into fashion while working in a vintage shop in Kensington Market. In 1996 she began working for the owners of the Old Truman Brewery in East London.
In 2000 they launched Fashion East, a non-profit program to scout and support new designers and give them a chance to show at London Fashion Week. After its success, she started MAN in 2005 with Topman, a similar program for emerging menswear designers. Kennedy became known for discovering and backing new talent, helping launch designers such as Jonathan Saunders, House of Holland, Roksanda Ilincic, Gareth Pugh, Richard Nicoll, Christopher Shannon, Charles Jeffrey, and Craig Green.
In 2010 she launched Lulu & Co to mark Fashion East’s 10th anniversary. It began as a capsule of ten archive dresses by Fashion East designers and grew into a regular line, collaborating with artists and photographers. Lulu & Co is sold internationally at places like Liberty and Net-a-Porter.
Kennedy is often called the fairy godmother of British fashion and received an MBE in March 2012 for services to the fashion industry. She is regarded as a key figure in the growth of London Fashion Week.
Personal life: She was married briefly to artist Mat Collishaw (2007–2008) and has a daughter, Rainbow Kennedy, born in 2014. They live in East London.
