Heerdt
Heerdt is an old neighborhood in Düsseldorf, located in Borough 4. It lies on the left bank of the Rhine, opposite the city center and other districts. The area is about 4.05 square kilometers and has around 12,400 residents (2020).
Three bridges connect Heerdt to the city center: Oberkassler Brücke, Rheinkniebrücke, and Theodor-Heuss-Brücke. Cars, bikes and pedestrians can use all bridges. The Oberkassler Brücke is also used by some tram and underground lines. There is direct access to motorway 52 toward Krefeld and Mönchengladbach. Trams U70 and U76 link Heerdt with Meerbusch, Krefeld and central districts, while U75 goes to Neuss.
Heerdt was first mentioned in the 11th century and was long connected to Neuss. From 1794 to 1814 Neuss was part of France under Napoleon. In the late 19th century, the first permanent bridge between Düsseldorf and Heerdt spurred industrial growth. Today, the area still shows its industrial past, but you can also find old churches and other historic relics.
