Hassan Hamdy
Hassan Hamdy, born Mohamed Mahmoud Hamdy Ismail on August 2, 1949, in Cairo, is a former Egyptian footballer and long-time Al Ahly administrator. He played for Al Ahly from 1969 to 1978 as a defender/midfielder, making about 250 league appearances and scoring 15 goals. He also represented the Egypt national team in the early 1970s and served as the club captain.
Off the field, Hamdy was the vice president of Al Ahly during Saleh Selim’s presidency. He chaired the Al-Ahram advertising agency and led the Cairo branch of the International Advertising Association.
In 1979, Hamdy became head of Al Ahly’s football department, guiding the team to many titles: seven Egyptian league championships and four Egypt Cups (1981, 1983, 1984, 1985). He led Al Ahly to Africa’s top club competition title in 1982 and won the African Cup three times in 1984, 1985, and 1986. In 1985 he helped arrange a notable Egypt Cup meeting between Al Ahly and Zamalek, with Al Ahly defeating El Zamalek on August 4, 1985.
Hamdy returned to club leadership in 1996, winning the highest number of votes in the club elections, and in 2000 he was elected vice-president. After the death of Saleh Selim, he was elected president of Al Ahly on May 7, 2002, a position he held until March 28, 2014. He was reelected in 2004, during the club’s centenary celebrations.
