Lamont (pronounced LAH-mont), sometimes written LaMont, is a surname with several origins. In Scotland it comes from the Clan Lamont and has ties to Ulster in Ireland. In France it is a habitational name from places named Amont, meaning “upstream” or “uphill,” in the regions of Haute-Saône and Haute-Vienne.

The Scottish form probably comes from the old Norse Lagman (Logmaðr), meaning “law-man.”
