Haryanvi cinema
Haryanvi cinema is the film industry in the Indian state of Haryana that makes movies in the Haryanvi language. There are about 106 screens in Haryana. In 2022, four Haryanvi feature films were released in theaters. In 2023, the gross box office for Haryanvi films in India was ₹0.00 crore.
History
- The first Haryanvi film, Dharti, came out in 1968 and was directed by Kidar Sharma. Because Mumbai’s Hindi film industry was dominant, many Haryanvi films were not made until the 1980s.
- Chandrawal (1984) was the first commercially successful Haryanvi film. It was produced by Devi Shankar Prabhakar and starred Usha Sharma, Jagat Jakhar, Nasib Singh Kundu, and Daryav Singh Malik.
- Laado (2000) was another milestone. It won the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the National Film Awards, becoming the first Haryanvi film to win a national award.
- Pagdi The Honour (2014) won two National Film Awards: Baljinder Kaur won Best Supporting Actress, and the film was named Best Feature Film in Haryanvi.
- Satrangi (2016) won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Haryanvi. Its director, Sundeep Sharma, also earned Yashpal Sharma’s Best Actor award at the Jharkhand International Film Festival in 2018. The film won six awards at the Haryana International Film Festival in 2017.
Overall, Chandrawal’s success helped start more Haryanvi films, but only a small number have turned a profit—about one in twelve.
In May 2024, the Haryana government gave financial incentives to six films under the Haryana Film Policy. The selected titles included Chhalaang, Tera Kya Hoga Lovely, Teri Meri Gal Ban Gayi, and Fuffad Ji. The policy aims to support local filmmakers and attract more production in Haryana.
