Harirampur, West Bengal
Harirampur is a small census town in Harirampur CD Block, Gangarampur subdivision, Dakshin Dinajpur district, West Bengal, India. It lies at about 25.38°N, 88.27°E. The town has a police station and serves as the block’s headquarters.
According to the 2011 census, Harirampur had 5,021 residents (about 51% male and 49% female) and 487 children below six. There are 3,780 literates, about 83% literacy for people over six.
Harirampur is connected by the Harirampur–Daulatpur Road to State Highway 10. The nearest railway station is Daulatpur Hat on the Eklakhi–Balurghat line. There have been plans to extend broad gauge railway lines in the region through Harirampur, but progress has been slow; the Itahar–Buniadpur line would pass through Harirampur.
Education and health: Dewan Abdul Gani College opened in 1994, affiliated to the University of Gour Banga, offering honours in Bengali, English, history, geography, philosophy and political science, plus arts. There’s also Government ITI Harirampur, two high schools (Harirampur A.S.D.M High School and Betna Ramakrishnapur High School) and a girls’ school. Harirampur Rural Hospital has 30 beds, and there is a Balihara primary health centre with 10 beds. An Animal Health Center network operates in the area.
Economy and farming: Harirampur is a major agricultural area with flat, loamy soil. Main crops include rice, wheat, maize, mustard, jute and vegetables. In kharif, Aush paddy and jute are common; in rabi, paddy, wheat and maize. Since there are no large rivers, farming relies on ponds, reservoirs and groundwater for irrigation.
