Hardy Cubasch
Hardy Cubasch, born 27 October 1980, is an Australian former rower who became a national champion and a world champion. He rowed for the Queensland University Boat Club and studied at the University of Queensland (B.Commerce, 2002). He later earned an M.Arts at Cambridge and raced in the Cambridge eight in the Boat Race.
Career highlights
- Early career: Represented Queensland in the youth eight at the 1998 Noel F Wilkinson Trophy and again in 1999.
- Interstate rowing: Competed in Queensland’s senior eight for the King's Cup at the Australian Interstate Regatta seven times from 2001 to 2008.
- Australian Championships: With Sam Conrad, raced for Queensland University; won national titles in 2005 in the men's pair and the men's coxless four. In 2006 they won the coxless four in a composite crew with Drew Ginn and David Crawshay, receiving the Bob Aitken Memorial Trophy. In 2008, he finished second in a coxed four.
- World and international competition:
- 1998 Junior World Championships (Linz Ottensheim): fifth in the junior coxed four.
- 2000 World Rowing U23 Championships (Copenhagen): silver in the men’s eight.
- 2005 World Rowing Championships (Gifu): world champion in the men’s coxed pair with Sam Conrad; this was Australia’s second world title in that event.
- Cambridge years:
- 2009: Rowed at six in the Cambridge eight for the Boat Race.
- 2010: Wrist tendinitis kept him from the main boat; rowed in Cambridge’s reserve Goldie against Isis.
- 2011: Rowed again in the Cambridge eight in the Boat Race and completed an M.A. at Cambridge.
