Hardstep
Hardstep is a subgenre of drum and bass that began in the mid-1990s in the United Kingdom. It has a gritty, urban sound with faster, heavier but less choppy breaks than oldschool jungle, and simple electronic melodies. Beats are prominent and often sparse. It was popular with junglists, though techstep later became more popular. Early hardstep artists include DJ Hype, DJ Ellis Dee, Grooverider, Phantasy, Jumping Jack Frost, and DJ Zinc.
