Hans Corell
Hans Axel Valdemar Corell (born July 7, 1939) is a Swedish lawyer and diplomat. He was the United Nations’ Legal Counsel and Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs from 1994 to 2004, heading the UN Office of Legal Affairs. Before joining the UN, he served as Sweden’s Ambassador and Under-Secretary for Legal and Consular Affairs. He earned a Master of Laws from Uppsala University.
Today, Corell serves on Brandeis University’s advisory board for Ethics, Justice and Public Life, and on the boards of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute and the International Science Programme. He chaired the board of trustees of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at Lund University from 2006 to 2012. He is on the Steering Committee of The Crimes Against Humanity Initiative, which aims to draft a treaty on crimes against humanity; the proposal is under review by the UN International Law Commission. He is an Honorary Co-Chair of the World Justice Project, which works to strengthen the Rule of Law. He has also contributed to the UN Audiovisual Library of International Law with a lecture on the role of a legal adviser in international organizations.
