Hang in Long Enough
Hang in Long Enough is a song by Phil Collins from the album ...But Seriously. It was released as the final single in September 1990. The track runs 4:44 and fits funk rock. It was written by Phil Collins and produced by Collins with Hugh Padgham. The single reached No. 23 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, No. 34 in the U.K., and No. 9 in Canada. B-sides varied by region (UK: “Around the World in 80 Presets”; US: “Separate Lives” (Live)). It was released by Atlantic, Virgin, and WEA.
The music video, directed by Jim Yukich and produced by Paul Flattery, shows Collins and his band on a large ship that sinks like the Titanic. It uses stock footage from the movie A Night to Remember and even names the ship the S. S. Udio as a playful reference to Sussudio. The Phenix Horns start the first melody, and Collins performs the song on stage while the audience watches in amazement at the set and costumes. The visuals switch between color and black-and-white within the same frame. Throughout the song, Collins signals the band to lower their volume. In the second verse, the ship starts sinking as the loud music causes bolts to rattle and water to flood in. At the end, the band and audience escape in lifeboats while Collins finishes with a guitar solo on stage. The ship sinks, but Collins and his band escape in a lifeboat that even includes the dog from the video for “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven.” Collins quips, “I told you, you was playing too loud.”
