Hamburger Segel-Club
Hamburger Segel-Club e.V. (HSC) is one of Germany’s oldest and most active sailing clubs. It sits on the shore of Lake Außenalster in Hamburg.
The club helps run big sailing events. It works with Kiel Week, one of the world’s largest regattas, together with the Kiel Yacht Club, the Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee, and the Norddeutscher Regattaverein. HSC also helps organize Travemünder Woche with the Yacht Club of Lübeck and the Norddeutscher Regattaverein.
History: The club began as the Hamburger Yacht-Club in 1892. A split in 1895 led to Hamburger Segel-Verein, and in 1927 the Hamburger Segel-Club was registered. Early members loved yacht racing and cruising and joined the Deutscher Segler-Verband soon after. The club organized the Nordseewoche in 1925, and from 1927–1928 helped with Travemünder Woche and Kiel Week.
In 1934–35 the Nazi regime brought sailing clubs under state control. After World War II, the club had to be rebuilt. Carl Georg Gewers led the rebuilding and helped recover seized boats from the British authorities. Kiel Week was organized again in 1950, and the club has grown since then.
