Ground out (baseball)
A ground out happens when the batter hits a ball that stays on the ground and a fielder throws to first base before the batter gets there, getting him out. Usually an infielder fields the ground ball and throws to the first baseman, who catches the ball or tags the batter before he reaches first base. If another baserunner is put out on the same play, it’s a double play; if two outs are recorded in the same play, it’s a triple play—the most outs possible on one play. There are other ways to record double or triple plays that don’t involve a ground out.
