Grammatostomias flagellibarba
Grammatostomias flagellibarba is a small black fish known as a barbeled dragonfish. It is listed as Least Concern for conservation.
Classification (simple): Kingdom Animalia; Phylum Chordata; Class Actinopterygii; Order Stomiiformes; Family Stomiidae; Genus Grammatostomias; Species G. flagellibarba. The full scientific name is Grammatostomias flagellibarba Holt & Byrne, 1910.
Appearance and size:
- Grows to about 15.2 cm (6 inches) long.
- Has a chin barbel about six times longer than its body.
- Has a large light-producing photophore behind each eye and two rows of very small photophores along its sides.
Habitat and range:
- Lives at depths up to about 1,500 meters (around 5,000 feet).
- Found in the North Atlantic, especially off southern Ireland and in the Bay of Biscay.
Discovery:
- The type specimen was caught in 1909 by the ship Helga, southwest of Ireland, while fishing in deep water.
