Grace Church School
Grace Church School is a private, independent, coeducational, college‑preparatory day school in New York City. The original building is located at 86 Fourth Avenue in the East Village, and the high school division operates at 46 Cooper Square. The school began in 1894 as Grace Church’s choir boarding school and started operating as a private day school in 1934. It became coeducational in 1947 and joined the Guild of Independent Schools of New York City that same year. In 2006 Grace Church School became a separate legal entity from the church and now owns the buildings at 84–96 Fourth Avenue, including Clergy House, Memorial House, and Neighborhood House. The high school building in Cooper Square opened in 2011, with a rooftop addition that includes a 14,000‑square‑foot gym and athletic center.
In 2015–2016 the school began offering a Junior Kindergarten through 12th grade program. The school’s enrollment is around 800 students with about 216 faculty members. Grace Church School is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools and the National Association of Independent Schools, and it is a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, along with several other associations. It maintains a close relationship with Grace Church and has been governed by an independent Board of Trustees since 1972.
Athletics include basketball and climbing, and the school colors are blue and white. In 2015 the school introduced antiracist language into its curriculum, which led to internal discussions about how it was implemented.
