Live in Japan (John Coltrane album)
Live in Japan is a live album by John Coltrane, recorded during his only Japanese tour in July 1966 in Tokyo at Shinjuku Kosei Nenkin Hall and Sankei Hall. The group featured Coltrane, his wife Alice Coltrane on piano, Pharoah Sanders on sax and bass clarinet, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums. The performances are long, dense free-jazz improvisations that show Coltrane moving deeply into the avant-garde. Some pieces approach an hour in length.
The album’s release history is that the 1973 Impulse! release was a heavily abridged double LP titled Concert In Japan. In Japan the same year, Coltrane In Japan appeared as an expanded three-LP set, followed by Second Night In Tokyo in 1977 which added an interview. MCA later released Coltrane In Tokyo Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. The first CD editions in the 1990s were Live In Japan Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, and in 1991 Impulse! issued a four-CD box set containing both volumes.
Musically, the recordings capture some of Coltrane’s longest and most intense improvisations from his late period, with Sanders pushing the music into new directions through overblowing, multiphonics, and other extended techniques. Coltrane sometimes plays alto sax on this tour after receiving the instrument in Japan. A notable moment is the slow, lyrical “Peace on Earth,” which many listeners regard as a highlight. Critics have praised the performances for their stamina, depth, and spiritual power, though the long tracks can be challenging for casual listeners.
