Gold Coast Sun
Gold Coast Sun was a weekly newspaper for Australia’s Gold Coast region. It started in March 1967 and was once the area’s most-read community paper. It was first published from an office in Surfers Paradise in the late 1960s, then moved to Southport, and in 1986 settled in a warehouse on Enterprise Street in Molendinar.
In 1977 the Gold Coast Bulletin bought the Sun from Sam White. Rogin Taylor became the manager and editor and stayed in that role until 1986. News Corporation bought the Sun in 1987, along with the Bulletin.
The Sun grew over time. In 1989 it expanded from one edition to three: the Southport Sun, the Gold Coast Sun, and the Hinterland Sun. Editors in the 1970s and 1980s included Rogin Taylor and Dr Lionel Hurst. In the 1990s and early 2000s, editor Feyne Weaver led the paper to more growth and it won a PANPA award (an industry prize) in 2005. Weaver retired in 2006 and was replaced by Shane Watson, who expanded the paper to five editions, including Upper North and Tweed.
The Sun and its staff moved in 2009 to the Gold Coast Bulletin’s Molendinar complex, and in September 2013 to Southport’s Seabank building. In June 2020, like many News Corp papers in Australia, the Sun ceased publication.
