Vladimír Weiss (footballer, born 1989)
Vladimír Weiss (born 30 November 1989) is a Slovak footballer who plays as a winger or attacking midfielder for Slovan Bratislava.
Career highlights
- He started at Inter Bratislava and moved to Manchester City’s academy in 2006. He made his first-team debut in 2009 and spent time on loan at Bolton Wanderers, Rangers, and Espanyol.
- He later played for Pescara in Italy, Olympiacos in Greece, and in Qatar with Lekhwiya and Al-Gharafa.
- In 2020, Weiss returned to Slovakia with Slovan Bratislava, where he has helped the team compete for titles.
International career
- Weiss debuted for Slovakia in 2009 and earned over 70 caps, scoring several goals.
- He played at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
- He scored Slovakia’s opening goal at Euro 2016 in a win over Russia, becoming the first player to score at the European Championship while playing for a non-European club.
- He announced his first retirement from the national team in 2018, but returned to international football in 2021 for Euro 2020 (played in 2021).
Family
- He comes from a footballing family. His father, Vladimír Weiss Sr., was a Slovakia coach who gave him his international debut, and his grandfather, Vladimír Weiss Sr. or II, was also a famous player.
Recent events
- In May 2021, Weiss helped Slovan Bratislava win the Slovak Cup, contributing to a domestic success for the club.
- In October 2024, he announced his retirement from professional football after a defeat for Slovan, but in December 2024 he reversed the decision and returned as a player.
