Gilbertville is a small community in the town of Canton, Oxford County, Maine. It’s about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Augusta. The community grew between 1879 and 1882 when a sawmill and a pulp mill were built, helped by 10-year tax breaks from the Canton government. By 1882, Gilbertville had more than 500 residents and a school, post office, and several boarding houses. It was named after the Gilbert brothers, lumbermen from New Hampshire.
