George Gowan

George Mauleverer Gowan (6 February 1818 – 15 July 1890) was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. He was born in Madras, British India, the son of George Cowan. He was educated in England at Charterhouse and Harrow. In 1849 he married Anne Stratton and later lived in Leamington Spa.

Gowan joined the army by purchasing a commission in the 97th Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1837, then became a lieutenant in 1839 and a captain in 1845.

As a cricketer, he played as a wicket-keeper. He appeared in two first-class matches: for the Marylebone Cricket Club against Cambridge University at Lord's in 1849, and for the Gentlemen of the North against the Gentlemen of the South at Nottingham in 1862. He scored 21 runs in total, with a top score of 15, and took two catches and one stumping.

He died in Marylebone, London, in July 1890 at the age of 72.
