Gauhati Medical College and Hospital
Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMC or GMCH) is a public medical college and hospital in Guwahati, Assam. It is the second medical college established in the state, and it opened on 20 September 1960. The campus is in Bhangagarh, Guwahati, and the college is affiliated with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences. The current principal is Dr. Achyut Chandra Baishya.
What GMC offers
- MBBS: a 5.5-year program including a one-year internship. Since 2019, the annual intake is 200 students.
- Postgraduate education: MD, MS, and Diploma courses in various specialties (about 210 postgraduate seats).
- Superspecialty training: DM and MCh programs.
Key history and development
- GMC began in 1960 with preclinical classes in the Jalukbari area. The permanent campus and hospital were built on the Narakachal hill; the hospital started functioning at the Narakachal foothill in 1984.
- On 17 February 2021, GMC opened a radiation oncology block with a ₹28 crore topotherapy machine, becoming the first medical college in the country to have this facility.
- In 2024, GMC carried out a cadaveric kidney transplant in its Super Specialty Wing.
Background context
- The first medical college in Assam was Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, established in 1947. Earlier health education efforts included the Berry White Medical School in Dibrugarh (established around 1898-99).
Student life
- The college has the Junior Doctors' Association and the Gauhati Medical College Students Union, formed in 1961. While student politics is less active today, students participate in events such as the annual Gamocha Painting Competition in memory of Srimanta Sankardeva and a Wall Magazine Competition during Saraswati Puja.
