John W. Brownson (New York politician)

John White Brownson (March 12, 1807 – September 5, 1860) was a 19th‑century politician from New York. He was born in Sunderland, Vermont, to Dr. John White Brownson and Laura Chipman, the daughter of Vermont Chief Justice Nathaniel Chipman. In 1814 his family moved to Gainesville, Genesee County, New York, where his father practiced medicine. He married Frances L. Cole on February 27, 1832; they had several children, including a son who would later become a Wisconsin State Representative.

Brownson served in the New York State Assembly in 1840 and 1841 (Genesee County) and in 1842 (Wyoming County). He was the Supervisor of Gainesville in 1844 and 1845. He then served in the New York State Senate (30th District) in 1848 and 1849. In 1852 he moved to Sharon, Walworth County, Wisconsin, where he died on September 5, 1860 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
