Divinyl sulfide is an organosulfur compound with the formula S(CH=CH2)2 (also written as C4H6S). It is a colorless liquid with a faint odor and can be found in some Allium plants (like garlic and onions). It forms from hydrogen sulfide and acetylene and can appear unintentionally when acetylene is produced by hydrolysis of calcium carbide that is contaminated with calcium sulfide. Divinyl sulfide was first prepared in 1920 by reacting bis(2-chloroethyl)sulfide with sodium ethoxide. Related compounds include monovinyl sulfides (R-S-CH=CH2), which can be made by similar organic reactions.
