Gambell Army Airfield is a former U.S. Army airbase in Gambell, Alaska (Nome Census Area). It was built in 1943 and sits about 27 feet (8 meters) above sea level. There are no IATA or ICAO codes. The field had one runway, 4,500 feet (1,372 meters) long, paved with asphalt/concrete, oriented 16/34. During World War II it served as a transport hub to move Lend-Lease aircraft to the Soviet Union and as an emergency landing field for planes patrolling Alaska’s west coast. The airfield is owned by the State of Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities - Northern Region.
