Fried pickle
Fried pickles are a Southern U.S. snack made by battering and deep-frying dill pickle slices. They’re usually served as an appetizer or side, often with ranch dressing or another creamy dip.
The idea started in the early 1960s. The first known fried pickle recipe appeared in 1962 in the Oakland Tribune as “French Fried Pickles,” using sweet pickle slices and pancake mix. Dill pickles became famous when Bernell “Fatman” Austin showcased them in 1963 at the Duchess Drive In in Atkins, Arkansas. His recipe is kept within his family and is used only once a year at Picklefest in Atkins every May.
Today fried pickles are popular at food festivals and on many restaurant menus across the United States and beyond.
