Fredrik Adam Smitt
Fredrik Adam Smitt (9 May 1839, Halmstad – 19 February 1904, Stockholm) was a Swedish zoologist. He studied in Lund and Uppsala, earning his doctorate in 1863. He took part in Swedish expeditions to Svalbard in 1861 and 1868. In 1871 he became a professor at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, where he led the Department of Vertebrates. From 1879 he also taught zoology at Stockholm University. Smitt wrote many scientific papers and popular books, and he promoted modernizing techniques used in herring fishing.
