Fred McBagonluri
Fred McBagonluri (born 18 August 1970) is a Ghanaian engineer, inventor, writer, and educator. He is President and Provost of Academic City College in Ghana. He previously founded the Engineering Faculty at Ashesi University College and led the Ghana Climate Innovation Center, a World Bank–backed cleantech incubator.
In the United States, he held leadership roles in engineering and product development, including Vice President of New Product Development at Joerns Healthcare and Director positions at Becton Dickinson. He has worked with institutions such as Princeton University and Siemens Healthineers.
Education: He earned a B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering (summa cum laude) from Central State University with a minor in Applied Mathematics; an M.S. in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Virginia Tech; a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from the University of Dayton; and an MBA from MIT.
Awards and work: He was named Black Engineer of the Year’s Most Promising Scientist in 2008, was a 2009 NASA ASCAN finalist, and won the 2008 NJBiz Innovator Hero Award. He holds more than 40 patents and patent applications and has contributed to computer-aided design, artificial intelligence, 3D data processing, and advanced hearing systems. He has authored nine books, including three novels.
Personal life: Born in La Bawaleshie, East Legon, Ghana, to David Mac‑Bagonluri and Patience Mensah, he was raised by his grandmother. He attended St. Louis Preparatory, Nandom Senior High, and St. Augustine’s College before studying at Central State University, Virginia Tech, MIT, and the University of Dayton.
