Frank D'Amelio
Frank D'Amelio (born March 14, 1957) is a former American soccer defender who played in the NASL, the ASL and the NASL indoor season. After his playing days, he spent more than two decades coaching at the college, high school and youth levels.
Born in Turin, Italy, D'Amelio moved to the United States as a child and grew up on Long Island, New York. He attended Baldwin High School and began college at Adelphi University in 1976. He took a year off in 1977 to play for the U.S. U-21 national team, then continued at the University of Evansville, where he played for the Purple Aces in 1978 and 1979. He was inducted into the Evansville Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.
In 1980, D'Amelio was drafted by the Philadelphia Fury and played eight games for them. He spent the 1980–81 NASL indoor season with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, then played for New York United in the 1981 ASL season, helping the team reach the championship game before they lost to Carolina Lightnin'. He retired from professional play after that season.
D'Amelio began coaching while finishing his degree, serving as an Evansville assistant in 1980. He later coached Reitz Memorial High School in 1982, guiding them to the Indiana State semifinals, though it was an unpaid position and he worked construction at the time. After a brief period in Las Vegas as a blackjack dealer in 1983, he returned to coaching and moved back to New York for a time before returning to Las Vegas in 1993. He was an assistant coach at UNLV from 1998 to 2005. In 2003 he became head coach of the Las Vegas Strikers in the National Premier Soccer League, a role he held until the team folded after the 2006 season. He also coached at Valley High School and, in 2006, the Las Vegas Toros in the National Alliance Soccer League.
