Frank A. Chervenak, MD, is System Chief of Ethics at Northwell Health and the Hugh RK Barber Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Associate Dean of International Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He earned a BS with highest distinction from Pennsylvania State University and an MD from Thomas Jefferson University, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed an internal medicine internship at New York Medical College, an obstetrics and gynecology residency at NYMC/St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, and a fellowship in maternal–fetal medicine at Yale.

Chervenak began his career as an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, directing Perinatal Research and receiving the Dr. Solomon Silver Award for applying research to clinical practice. In 1987 he joined New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center as Associate Professor and Director of Obstetric Ultrasound and Ethics, and in 1991 became Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine and Director of Obstetrics. He was named Full Professor with tenure in 1992, Vice Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1998, and Acting Chairman in 1999.

He has published more than 300 papers and co-authored or co-edited 36 textbooks. His research focuses on ultrasound, ethics, multiple gestation, and clinical obstetrics and gynecology. He has held leadership roles in professional organizations and has received honors including an honorary doctorate from Semmelweis University in Budapest and honorary membership in the Italian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
