Francisca Beretervide
Francisca Beretervide (6 June 1886 – 31 October 1976) was a Uruguayan chemist, educator, author, lawyer, and feminist who helped advance women’s rights in Uruguay. She was born in the Flores Department and studied Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of the Republic, later earning a Doctor of Law degree in 1917. Beretervide served as dean of the Women’s University in Montevideo from 1917 to 1922, succeeding Clotilde Luisi, the first female dean. She was a founding member and secretary general of the Consejo Nacional de Mujeres, part of the International Council of Women. Along with Paulina Luisi and Isabel Pinto de Vidal, she promoted women’s suffrage in Uruguay. Beretervide wrote for Acción Femenina to support women’s rights and networking among feminist groups, and her published works included topics on chemistry and social justice. She died in Montevideo in 1976. In 2001, Montevideo named a public space Espacio Libre Doctora Francisca Beretervide in her honor, a triangular recreation area near Atahualpa and the Cantero Doctor Alvaro Carbone.
