Fords Prairie, Washington

Fords Prairie is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Lewis County, Washington. The population was 2,234 at the 2020 census. It is often considered part of Centralia, which lies to the south, with Grand Mound to the north. The area sits along the Chehalis River and near Interstate 5 (Exit 82).

History in brief
The Upper Chehalis people called the area Tasunshun, meaning resting place. In 1846, Sidney S. Ford Sr. and his wife Nancy settled on a 640-acre land claim along the Chehalis River, and the place became known as Fords Prairie. It was an important stop on a wagon trail between the Columbia River and Puget Sound. The Ford home served as a courthouse in its early days, and Ford worked as an Indian agent. The nearby Halfway House inn stood in the 1800s but was later demolished. A famous cherry tree once grew in the area, noted for its size.

Modern era
Starting in 1946, Centralia began annexing parts of Fords Prairie. A 1982 vote to become a city failed. Today, Fords Prairie is often seen as part of Centralia’s urban growth area.

Geography and nearby places
The area covers about 3.9 square miles, mostly land with a small amount of water. The Chehalis River runs along the west side. Grand Mound is to the north and Centralia to the south. I-5 forms the eastern edge, with access at Harrison Avenue (Exit 82).

Notable sites and economy
Fords Prairie is home to sites like the Wesley Everest Gravesite (on the National Register of Historic Places), Fort Borst Park, the Discovery Trail along the Chehalis River, and the Bob Oke Game Farm. Its early economy was based on farming and dairy. The Raish General Store served residents for many years, but larger retailers now surround the area in Centralia.

Education
The Lum Schoolhouse was the first local school. By 1906, the Fords Prairie school district served many students and later merged with Centralia in 1944. A new school building opened in 1947, and Centralia High School is located in Fords Prairie.

Demographics and current events
In 2000, about 1,961 people lived in the area; in 2020, the population was 2,234. In 2024, authorities warned that drinking water in parts of Fords Prairie might be unsafe due to rising nitrate levels, prompting further testing.
