Florian Jungwirth
Florian Jungwirth is a German former professional footballer who played as a defender or defensive midfielder. He was born on January 27, 1989, in Gräfelfing, West Germany.
He started his football career at a young age with TSV Eintracht Karlsfeld before joining 1860 Munich’s youth system. He moved up through 1860 Munich II and the first team, then joined Dynamo Dresden in 2010. At Dresden he faced a serious knee injury but helped the club win promotion to higher leagues. He later played for VfL Bochum and Darmstadt 98, helping Darmstadt reach the Bundesliga and making his top-flight debut in 2015.
In 2017 he moved to Major League Soccer, signing with the San Jose Earthquakes. He spent four seasons in San Jose, scoring his first MLS goal in 2017. In 2021 he was traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He retired from playing in January 2023 and became an assistant coach for Vancouver’s first team.
Internationally, Jungwirth represented Germany at various youth levels and captained the under-19 team to the 2008 European Championship title.
Off the field, he is known for his animal welfare work, including rescuing dogs from Spanish shelters, and his opposition to the Yulin dog meat festival in China. He married his wife Kathleen in 2015 and had a church wedding in 2016. He also holds a U.S. green card (as of 2018), which helped him play in MLS.
