Flag of Mali
Flag of Mali
The national flag is a vertical tricolor of green, gold, and red, using the pan-African colors. It has a 2:3 proportion. It was first adopted on 4 April 1959 when Mali joined the Mali Federation. A version with a black Kanaga figure on the gold stripe was used briefly, but the symbol was removed due to opposition. The current flag design has been in use since 1 March 1961 and is almost the same as Guinea’s flag, with the colors in reverse order. Green stands for the fertility of the land, gold for purity and mineral wealth, and red for the blood shed for independence.
