Flag of Algeria
Flag of Algeria
The national flag of Algeria has two equal vertical bands: green on the left and white on the right. In the center is a red crescent surrounding a red five-pointed star. The flag’s proportions are 2:3, and it was adopted on July 3, 1962. A version of the flag was used by the Algerian government in exile from 1958 to 1962.
Symbolism: Green represents Islam, white stands for purity, and the red crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam. The five-pointed star is often linked to Islam’s five pillars, though interpretations of the colors and symbols can vary.
Variants:
- Naval ensign: the same flag design but with two white crossed anchors in the canton (adopted June 27, 1963; amended in 1995).
- Naval jack: the national flag shown in the canton on a light blue field, used as the flag for ships at sea.
History: The current flag grew out of Algeria’s struggle for independence from France and was formalized by law in 1963, after being used by independence movements in the preceding years.
