First Mountain State Forest
First Mountain State Forest is a state forest in Rockingham County, Virginia, northwest of Elkton. It sits next to the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
The forest became Virginia’s 25th state forest on October 7, 2019, announced by Governor Ralph Northam.
The 573-acre property, once Boone’s Run Farm, was bought in 2019 from the Dofflemyer family. Most funding came from the DuPont natural resource damages and restoration settlement, with additional support from the Virginia Department of Forestry and the Dofflemyer Family.
The land lies on the southeast slope of First Mountain at the southern end of the Massanutten Mountain range. It features pine and hardwood forest and open meadows. There are more than 21,700 feet of stream frontage on about eight streams, including Boone Run, which flows into the Shenandoah River and is good for brook trout fishing.
The property continues to operate as a tree farm and is open for hiking and mountain biking. There are no facilities on site.
