Eric Platz
Eric Stephen Platz (born March 3, 1973) is an American drummer, percussionist, and educator. He was born in Cumberland, Maryland, and has strong ties to Boston, Massachusetts. Since the late 1990s, Platz has toured across North America with artists from many genres, playing jazz, improvisation, rock, alt-country, and world music, including Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and North African styles.
He is currently a member of Carrie Rodriguez’s band and the world music group Asefa. Platz has appeared on TV, including PBS’s Austin City Limits, and his bands have earned praise from The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Time Out, and the Village Voice. He has co-led two improvised music trios, FourMinusOne and Fat Little Bastard, and has performed with artists such as Lucinda Williams, Bill Frisell, and Joe Lovano.
Platz holds an MMus in Jazz Performance from the New England Conservatory and an ScB in Materials Science from Brown University. He lives in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, and is an assistant professor at Brandon University, teaching applied drumset, jazz ensembles, and world music courses.
