James G. Blaine was a Republican politician from Maine. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876, and was Speaker of the House from 1869 to 1875. He then served in the U.S. Senate from 1876 to 1881. Blaine sought the Republican nomination for president several times, unsuccessfully in 1876 and 1880, and was nominated in 1884. In that election, he narrowly lost to Democrat Grover Cleveland.
