Elaine Arnold (married name Gloria Elaine Scorza) was an American soprano born April 1, 1911, in Houston, Texas, and died December 1, 2006. She used the stage name Gloria E. Arnold and was the youngest person ever to win a Juilliard School scholarship. She studied with the famous soprano Marcella Sembrich and became her protégé.

As a teenager, she sang in London in 1924 for British aristocrats and later at a Paris reception for the French president. She earned the nickname the “Texas Nightingale” for her early talent and could sing very high notes. In London she impressed audiences with pieces like Thou Lovely Bird from La Perle du Brésil and Comin’ Thro’ the Rye.

In 1927, with her Juilliard scholarship, she studied in New York under Sembrich. She continued her training in Milan, preparing for operas such as La traviata, La bohème, and La fille du régiment. In 1931, she made her Milan debut as Amina in La Sonnambula and met her future husband, Mario Scorza, a stained-glass artist. Two years later, as Mussolini rose to power, they left Italy for the United States.

Back in America, Elaine Scorza did not perform as much, partly due to the Great Depression. She taught Italian opera to others and, as an accomplished concert pianist, played Beethoven and Chopin. She remained an active member of San Antonio’s opera circle.
