El Puerto de Liverpool
El Puerto de Liverpool, S.A.B. de C.V. is a Mexican company that combines retail, financial services, and real estate. It began in 1847 when Jean Baptiste Ebrard opened the first Liverpool store in the historic center of Mexico City (Carranza and 20 de Noviembre). The group is now headquartered in Santa Fe, a business district of Mexico City.
What it does
- Retail: operates department stores under Liverpool and Suburbia, along with many fashion-brand stores and a logistics center called Arco Norte (under construction).
- Financial: offers customer credit and insurance.
- Real estate: runs shopping malls, mainly under the Galerías brand; Perisur is the exception, not branded Galerías.
What it owns and sells
- In Mexico, it runs about 125 Liverpool stores, 195 Suburbia stores, around 120 fashion-brand stores, and about 30 Galerías shopping centers (as of 2025).
- It sells clothing, shoes, cosmetics, jewelry, home goods, sporting goods, and specialty foods.
- It has franchise rights to many brands, including GAP, Banana Republic, Sfera, Punt Roma, MAC, Kiehl’s, NYX, Urban Decay, Pottery Barn, West Elm, and Williams Sonoma.
International stakes
- The group has notable stakes in Nordstrom (USA) and Unicomer Group (Central America and the Caribbean). In late 2024, it planned to raise its Nordstrom stake as Nordstrom prepared to go private. In May 2025, the Nordstrom family and El Puerto de Liverpool completed an all-cash deal to take Nordstrom private, with the Nordstrom family holding 50.1% and Liverpool 49.9%.
Size and scope
- The company’s headquarters are in Santa Fe, Mexico City, with Mexico as its main market.
- Financially, 2022 revenue was about MXN 176 billion (roughly USD 9.1 billion). Operating income was about MXN 25.5 billion, net income about MXN 17.4 billion, and assets around MXN 94.5 billion. It employed about 77,000 people.
