Edward Humes is an American journalist and nonfiction writer. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and studied at Hampshire College. In 1989, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Specialized Reporting for investigative stories about the U.S. military he wrote for the Orange County Register. After winning, he wrote many nonfiction books—13 in total—including Mississippi Mud, No Matter How Loud I Shout, Baby E.R., A Man and His Mountain, and Garbology, a popular choice for first-year college programs. In 2001, he taught a writing workshop at Whitney High School in Cerritos, California, and his experiences there inspired his book School of Dreams, published in 2004. He also writes for Sierra Magazine, California Lawyer, and Los Angeles Magazine, among others. He is married to journalist and author Donna Wares, and they live in Southern California.
