Economy of Kalpetta
Kalpetta’s economy relies on farming, industries, tourism, banking, trade and shopping. The Milma Wayanad dairy, located at Chuzhali inside Kalpetta Municipality, processes over 100,000 liters of milk daily and markets it in Wayanad and nearby districts. It also produces high-quality ghee exported to the Middle East, along with butter, buttermilk, curd and ice-cream.
A Mini Industries Park promoted by Kinfra at Kalpetta hosts several small-scale factories. Tourism has grown fast, bringing many resorts to Wayanad, with Kalpetta and nearby areas in Vythiri taluk hosting a large number of hotels and resorts.
Kalpetta is the banking hub of Wayanad. Canara Bank acts as the Lead District Bank with its lead office in Kalpetta. The State Bank of India runs two branches in the municipal area (Kainatty and Kalpetta). The State Bank of Travancore has two branches, including a Specialised Gold Point Branch. In total, Kalpetta has about 21 branches of scheduled banks (excluding Gramin and cooperative banks). Kerala Gramin Bank has a branch and Regional Office here. The head office of the Wayanad District Co-operative Bank is in Kalpetta, as is the Wayanad region office of the Kerala State Cooperative Bank, and the regional office of the Kerala State Cooperative Agricultural and Rural Development Bank Ltd.
Kalpetta is a major trade center for agricultural products and is one of 18 markets tracked by the Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Kerala (VFPCK) for prices. Coffee prices in Kalpetta are published in Malayalam newspapers and in business papers like the Economic Times.
The town hosts major jewellery, electronics and hypermarket chains, including Francis Alukkal, Malabar Gold, Chemmannur Gold, Grand Fresh Hypermarkets, Kannankandy Electronics, Whitemart Electronics, TBS Books and Beyond, and Planet Fashion.
