East Cocalico Township, Pennsylvania
East Cocalico Township is a small, mostly rural area in northeastern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It had a population of 10,808 at the 2020 census and covers about 20.6 square miles of mostly land.
The township was formed in 1838 when the original Cocalico Township was divided into East Cocalico, West Cocalico, and Ephrata. It gets its name from Cocalico Creek and a historic Native American settlement in the area.
Communities within East Cocalico include Reamstown and Swartzville, with parts of Stevens and Frysville also in the township. The town grew along important roads, including a stagecoach route on the Lancaster-to-Reading road.
Today, East Cocalico is governed by a Board of Supervisors. As of 2020, the population is mostly White with small numbers of other races. There are about 3,936 households and around 3,000 families. The median household income is roughly $90,000, with a per‑capita income around $41,000. The area remains known for farming, thanks to fertile soil and a strong agricultural heritage.
Key places include the East Cocalico Recreational Park on East Church Street near Route 222 and parts of the Pennsylvania State Game Lands along the eastern edge of the township. The community continues to balance its rural character with local growth.
