Duke of Buccleugh (1831 ship)
The Duke of Buccleugh was an East Indiaman launched in 1831 for owner Robert Green, built by Green, Wigram's & Green at Blackwall. She was about 136 feet long, 31 feet wide, and around 6,200 tons burden.
EIC voyage (1831–1832)
The British East India Company chartered her on 29 April 1831 for £8 9s per ton for a voyage to Bengal and back. Captain Alexander Henning sailed from the Downs on 10 June 1831. She reached Madras on 22 September and Calcutta on 10 October. On the way home she stopped at Madras again on 18 January 1832, then the Cape on 10 March, then St Helena on 30 March, and arrived back at her moorings on 8 May 1832.
Later service
From 1832 to 1840, Duke of Buccleugh operated in private trade between England and India.
Fate
Duke of Buccleugh (master McCloud) was wrecked on 7 February 1840 on Point Palmyras Reef (about 20°44′N, 87°02′E) while en route from London to Calcutta. She carried 74 recruits, five women, and one child; one recruit died. The survivors were rescued by the Miranda.
