Dubysa Regiment
Dubysa Regiment
The Dubysa Regiment was a Lithuanian infantry unit in the Uprising of 1863. It was led by Bolesław Kołyszko, its first and only commander. The regiment was named after the Dubysa River and fought mainly in the Kaunas Governorate. Its size ranged from about 700 to 1,170 men.
It began as a rebel group organized near Kaunas in March 1863. It formed in the forests along the Dubysa, between Čekiškė and Aukštdvaris. Kołyszko was joined by Bronislavas Žarskis and Antanas Norvaiša, and together they created the Dubysa Regiment.
Among its members was Aleksandras Vytartas, the vicar of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Čekiškė, who announced the uprising’s manifesto.
Kołyszko led the regiment in battles against the Imperial Russian Army at Aukštdvaris on March 29, near Lenčiai on April 1, and near Misiūnai on April 11.
